Mission Statement/ Goal

The goal of Institute of Medical Education is to serve the community by producing high quality Medical Lab Technicians. There is both a current and a projected shortage of Laboratory Personnel. Because of the skill sets MLT’s possess, their presence will help alleviate this stress, allowing laboratories to run more efficiently. Upon completion of the program, students will be issued a certificate of completion. Students are then eligible for the ASCP Board of Registry examination for Medical Laboratory Technician.

Job Description

Medical Lab Technician’s work side-by-side with medical technologists and pathologists, spending comparatively little time with patients. They perform the hundreds of laboratory procedures that help ferret out the cause and cure of disease. They are the physician’s fact finders, tracing the elusive clues to illness through samples of body tissues and fluids.

Objectives of the Program

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
-  Understand the concepts of laboratory medicine.
-  Use theory and knowledge from the discipline of laboratory science in providing and evaluating patient results.
-  Utilize laboratory skills to achieve optimal outcomes.
-  Perform his/her duties with professionalism and confidence.
-  Practice established safety procedures.
-  Communicate effectively and behave professionally with patients and other members of the health care team
-  Demonstrate professional awareness and responsibility expected of a laboratory professional.

Admissions Requirements/ Prerequisites


Be at least 18 years of age or older
Present a copy of your Associates Degree or 60 completed college units.     (Diplomas from foreign countries must be evaluated before enrolling)
Current Immunization record
CA Phlebotomy Technician I or II certification
Pass the school’s enrollment exam and pay enrollment fee $95
Prerequisite Courses:
Anatomy  & Physiology                       
Chemistry with Lab
(Prerequisite courses must have been taken in the last 5 years with passing grade)

Course Description

The MLT course is a combination of diadactic and clinical training. The Medical Laboratory Technician program is designed to prepare you to be a safe and effective MLT and to assist in the overall care of patients. As much as 80% of all medical decisions are based on the test results from the laboratory. As an MLT you will be instrumental in making sure that the results are accurate and can truly help the patient. At the end of the training students will be ready to take the licensing exam and once passed receive a license to work not only in the state of California but almost everywhere in the USA.

Job Outlook

There is a current shortage of MLT positions and an even greater projected shortage of all laboratory personnel. MLT’s help the laboratory run at its most efficient pace. Once students complete their MLT training they can earn money while using their degree as a stepping stone to the transition into the position of Clinical Laboratory Scientist.




Health care continues to change at an ever- increasing rate, there continues to be a need for highly skilled professionals who can work in the physician's office, clinic, and hospital environment. The profession of medical assistant can be a career in itself or could be the stepping stone to other careers such as nursing or medical office manager. The advantages of the course are that it is a fast track program which helps you get started in your field of choice in (just three months) a couple of months. Upon completion of this program, students will have the training and experience necessary for the various areas of clinical medical health care. Included are the front and back office skills characteristic of the clinical medical professional, providing students the flexibility to pursue a variety of vocational avenues based upon individual interests.
